I’m always a bit skeptical when I’m asked to review a record
from an unsigned band. I heard a lot of shitty stuff, but I nonetheless
approach each CD with an open mind. And I’m certainly glad I gave
Missouri‘s Fed Up a fair chance because the band’s nine
song album totally won me over; it’s 30 minutes of solid, straight-up
pop-punk. However, the originality is somewhat lacking, as hints of
bands like MxPx, New Found Glory and other pop-punkers abound. Yet Fed
Up does have some super-catchy material here. From minute one, I was
completely blown away by the band’s vocals–perfectly melodic
and perfect for this genre. I’ve heard countless bands who have
got the music, but can’t seem to find a strong vocalist to match.
But Fed Up has done just that.
My favorites
on the album are:
-“Point of Recognition”: Solid, fast punk beats mixed in
with an MxPx-like verse
-“Narcissist”: Brings back the rock with thick guitars and
a killer chorus. Plus, there’s a cool breakdown at the end and
even some clapping.
-“Lack of Trust”: A sentimental pick that tosses a little
bit of emo into the pop-punk mix
Other songs
on the record include “The End,” “No Lies” (also
a very good one) and “Again.” The album ender is the hilarious
“Anorexio del Bedexio,” a tribute to a skinny chick to whom
they insist that it’s time to eat some food. Accompanied by what
I swear is the sound of someone taking a whiz, that song flows into
a humorous hidden track. As a Spanish major, I can totally appreciate
the Mexican ditty, which teaches kids how easy it is to count to 10
in Spanish. Overall, Fed Up’s got an awesome piece of work.
