Something
Corporate
Leaving
Through the Window
MCA Records
It’s not everyday that a record can be described as beautiful,
but no other word so succinctly captures the major-label debut of Something
Corporate. Having quickly risen through the ranks at the pop-punk guru
Drive-Thru Records, Something Corporate is ready to make a national
splash and with Leaving Through the Window, there couldn’t
be a better album with which to attempt it.
Leaving Through
the Window has the genuine emotion of emo and the catchy hooks
of pop-punk, yet doesn’t fall into either of those genres. Rather,
it’s like Ben Folds meets the Counting Crows with a healthy dose
of punk rock energy tossed in to spice things up. With piano on every
song and string arrangements on a handful of tracks, the music is fuller
and yet soft and sensitive.
Two of the
best songs “Punk Rock Princess” and “Hurricane”
are re-recorded tracks from the band’s previous EP Audioboxer.
But brand new tracks like “I Want to Save You,” “I
Woke Up In a Car” and “Straw Dog” are simply amazing;
heartfelt songs expressed through the vehicle of rock and roll–kind
of like Jimmy Eat World, but a step better. The album’s first
single “If You C Jordan” is already making waves on select
radio stations, but once the nation catches wind of the rest of the
album, success is imminent. Drive-Thru Records has a knack for signing
some of the best talent around, and Something Corporate’s transfer
over to the big brother label MCA demonstrates the band’s potential.
They have really got something special with Leaving Through the
Window; it’s the best album I’ve heard all year.
