Interested in hearing amateur (that’s not an insult) interpretations
of some of your favorite punk bands? If so, then North Carolina’s
Sound the Hour should be right up your alley. Now don’t get me
wrong, Sound the Hour’s nine-song record “Trying is Half
of Failing” is strong, catchy punk rock, but it falters on the
originality. Traces of old Blink 182, Face to Face and MxPx permeate
the album; just to clarify though, I’m not calling these guys
a rip-off band because they do indeed have talent. Comprising Luke Knox
(vocals, guitar), Jared Clark (guitar, back-up vocals), Blake Edwards
(bass) and Eric Krouse (drums), Sound the Hour pack a solid punch with
“Trying....” The notable tracks on the CD include “New
One,” a semi-pop-punk number that contains hints of older Blink,
and “Problem Solved,” a faster tear (30 seconds to be exact)
through pure punk rock beats. Sound the Hour seem pretty keen on keeping
things short and sweet, as the 34-second song “Bass” follows;
and as the name suggests, it’s just a mellow bass riff. Like many
punk bands who have a bit of emo to their personality, Sound the Hour
include the softer “Lose It All” as a hidden track. I guess
bands like this don’t want to lose credibility by putting a slow
song in the main line-up. Other songs on the album include “Roll
With the Punches,” “Health Class Song” and “Our
Time.” Hopefully with a little more time, Sound the Hour can develop
a sound all its own. With talented musicians across the board, I look
forward to hearing what Sound the Hour will be capable of with its future
musical endeavors.
