Though the music of Sugarcult can’t exactly be classified as “punk,”
tours with Unwritten Law, Lefty, Mest and a stint on the Warped Tour
signal that these Cali rockers deserve an honorary “punk”
title. The band’s debut, Start Static, is a power-pop tour of
rock and roll, filled with supercatchy hooks and toe-tapping beats.
Words like “energetic” and “upbeat” hardly capture
the essence of the record, but will have to suffice until you hear the
album for yourself.
Immediately,
Tim Pagnotta’s vocal resemblance to the lead singer of Lit is
undeniable, but the music contains more substance than that West Coast
outfit. The album kicks off with the short, but high-energy, “You’re
the One” and then flows quickly into the single “Stuck in
America.” Both tracks set the stage for the energetic onslaught
of the rest of the album, certainly reiterating the power-pop classification.
Other sunny numbers include “Bouncing Off the Walls” and
“How Does It Feel.” Evidence of a subtle Gin Blossoms influence
appears on the slower “Lost In You,” and similarities to
other alternative groups pop up once in a while. Adding a little diversity
to Start Static is “Hate Every Beautiful Day,” which mixes
a healthy dose of angst to an otherwise melodic track, thereby giving
the song a bit of an edge and the award for best song on the album.
While Start
Static may not be groundbreaking material, it is an excellent record,
ideal for a sunny summer day. Not only does Sugarcult boast talent in
the studio, but onstage, these guys put on one hell of a show. Any time
they play, it’s like a giant party, so be sure to keep an eye
out for when they might be passing through your town. And until then,
give Start Static a listen and brighten up that CD collection.
